Independent nutrition advisory · Est. practice across Northland & Bay of Plenty

Better nutrition decisions, built around your orchard.

ION helps kiwifruit and avocado growers understand what's happening in each block, work out what's worth correcting, and build a practical programme around soil and leaf results, crop requirements, block history, and orchard observations.

Why it matters

Good nutrition management isn't just applying more fertiliser.

It's identifying what's limiting the block, then putting time and money into the changes most likely to make a difference. That translates into a few concrete things for a grower.

  • A clearer picture of the block

A clearer understanding of what's limiting growth or yield, rather than a general sense that something isn't right.

  • Better use of the input budget

Spend goes toward the corrections most likely to move the needle, rather than a broad programme applied the same way to every block.

  • Decisions that build on what's already known

Each season's programme builds on what the orchard has already shown, rather than starting the diagnosis over from scratch every visit.

Approach

Evidence before recommendation.

A programme isn't built from a test result alone. It's built from soil and leaf results read together, previous applications and test history, crop requirements and crop load, soil type and irrigation, orchard observations, and what's practical to apply given the grower's own systems. The method is the same one applied across every block ION manages, whether it's a first visit or the tenth season.

  1. Build the full picture

Soil and leaf results are interpreted together rather than in isolation, and considered alongside block history and orchard observations. The benefit is avoiding decisions based on one result read on its own.

  2. Turn the diagnosis into a practical programme

The programme prioritises what matters most for the block, using the most appropriate combination of dry, fertigated, and foliar inputs for the crop and the situation.

  3. Check the response and adjust

The programme is followed through the season and checked against testing, completed applications, and how the orchard is responding, not prepared once and left untouched until the next test.

Services

Practical nutrition management, from testing through to follow-up.

ION carries no fertiliser lines and holds no supplier rebates, so the work stays focused on interpretation, programme design, and oversight. That can mean investigating a specific issue on one block, or managing an orchard's nutrition programme across the full season.

  • Soil and leaf testing

Sampling and block-by-block interpretation against crop requirements, previous results, and orchard conditions, whichever lab issues the results.

  • Nutrition programme design

A practical programme covering dry, fertigation, and foliar inputs, including rates, timing, and priorities for the block.

  • In-season review and long-term tracking

Follow-up through the season, with programmes, applications, and test results carried forward so each year builds on what's already known.

Crops & Regions

Focused on kiwifruit and avocado across the upper North Island.

ION's client blocks run from the Far North through to the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand's core kiwifruit and avocado growing country. Working across two crops rather than horticulture in general means crop-specific interpretation, backed by experience across a wide range of soils, irrigation systems, orchard designs, and stages of development.

GrowTrackBuilt by ION

A clear record of every block, season after season.

Every ION programme is managed through GrowTrack, which keeps recommendations, completed applications, soil and leaf results, and fertigation settings connected by block. That means both grower and agronomist can see what was recommended, what was applied, how the block responded, and how the current programme relates to previous seasons. GrowTrack is also available directly to other growers and consultants at growtrack.co.nz.

ION was established to provide kiwifruit and avocado growers with specialist nutrition advice independent of fertiliser sales. There are no supplier ties or product margins, allowing each recommendation to be based on what best fits the block.

The aim is straightforward: help growers make better-informed decisions, improve orchard performance, and get more value from what they spend on inputs.

That's backed by hands-on agronomy experience across Northland and the wider Bay of Plenty, familiarity with how New Zealand's soil and leaf testing labs report their results, and crop-specific interpretation built for kiwifruit and avocado rather than horticulture in general, informed by relevant New Zealand research and published standards.

Purpose-built tools, including the GrowTrack platform, handle the block-by-block calculations and record-keeping behind each programme, so time goes into the agronomy rather than into maintaining spreadsheets. Together, ION and GrowTrack provide specialist agronomy, a clear block history, and a programme tailored to the orchard.

FAQ

Common questions from growers.

What does an independent orchard nutrition consultant do?

An independent orchard nutrition consultant interprets soil and leaf test results and designs a nutrition programme for a specific block, without selling fertiliser or earning a margin on any product recommended. For a grower, that means a recommendation based on what the block needs rather than what's being sold. ION provides this service for kiwifruit and avocado growers in New Zealand.

Does ION work with results from any soil or leaf testing lab?

Yes. Whichever lab a grower already uses, results are read on that lab's own reporting conventions and cross-checked against more than one interpretive framework, so there's no need to switch labs to work with ION.

What regions does ION cover?

Kiwifruit and avocado blocks from the Aupouri Peninsula, Kerikeri, Te Kopuru, Tapora, and Whangārei in the north, through Auckland and Hauraki, to Katikati, Te Puke, and the wider Bay of Plenty.

What is GrowTrack, and how does it relate to ION?

GrowTrack is the orchard nutrition management platform ION built to centralise nutrition programmes, application records, and soil and leaf testing by block, with fertigation management for blocks that use it. Every ION programme runs through it, so a grower can see their own block's history in one place, and it's also available directly to other growers and consultants at growtrack.co.nz.

Why use an independent consultant instead of advice from a fertiliser supplier?

A fertiliser supplier's advice carries a built-in incentive to recommend its own products. An independent consultant such as ION has no supplier ties or product margin, so the only incentive is a correctly diagnosed block and maximisation of production outcomes.

Do I need recent test results before getting in touch?

No. Existing results are useful if you have them, but they're not required to start. The orchard's location, crop, and the issue you want to work through are enough for ION to advise what information or testing would be worthwhile.

Does ION only prepare annual fertiliser programmes?

No. ION can investigate a specific issue on one block, but the greatest value generally comes from following a block over time and adjusting the programme as it responds through the season.

Contact

Talk through your orchard.

If you'd like a clearer view of what's happening in a block, or want to improve how nutrition is managed across the orchard, get in touch. Recent soil or leaf results are useful if you have them, but the crop, location, and the issue you want to work through are enough to start.
